In 1983, Klaus Bollinger founded the office Bollinger+Grohmann together with Manfred Grohmann. While the first projects were still being worked on at their shared kitchen table in Darmstadt, they soon moved to Frankfurt together with their still small team. Today, their company is active worldwide with about 400 employees at 18 branches. For many years, younger partners and managers at individual branches have supported the two founders at the management level. In 2010, the company was transformed into a holding company, which Klaus Bollinger chairs as chairman.

Klaus Bollinger studied at Darmstadt Technical University. He received his PhD from the University of Dortmund in 1984 after working as an assistant to Prof. Stefan Polónyi's Chair of Load-bearing Structures. After a teaching position in Peter Cook's architecture class at the Städelschule Frankfurt, Klaus Bollinger went to the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1994 and taught structural engineering at the Department of Architecture until 2021; from 2012-21, he was at the institute's director. Since 2011, Klaus Bollinger has also been a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin (Baukunst section).

In 2022, Klaus Bollinger was assigned the Ring of Honour of the University of Applied Arts after his emeritus. A Festschrift was also dedicated to him on this occasion, in which colleagues from teaching and practice paid tribute to him with around 100 contributions.
