The design is differentiated between an above-ground part with mostly irregular geometry (shaped sky) and an underground part constituting a regular grid. The building has 5 basement levels, housing parking-, service- and MEP-areas and 14 above-ground levels providing the exhibition-, office-, educational-, and recreational spaces.
The support for the shaped sky is a combination of four concrete cores (one main, three smaller) and six steel column clusters. The concrete cores are approximately rectangular shape in floor plan and elevations. Additional steel columns are spatially clustered to six areas, with their quantity, size and position computationally optimized.
A severe complex load-bearing behaviour and numerous architectural constraints for in-placement of columns require advanced algorithmic optimization technology for achieving structural efficiency.
The whole shaped sky is 160 m long, and 75 m on its widest end and on the other end 30 m. A big cantilever spans 25 m over the last column cluster. The average height above-ground is 20 m with a 50 m high big tower.
One of the project’s most prominent features is the 13 m high exhibition glass façade with the demand to provide maximum transparency and visual quality. Large 3 m high by 2.4 m wide insulated glazing units with staggered horizontal joints are connected over two sides through a structural silicon joint to vertical steel-glass fins without any secondary framing at the horizontal joints. The vertical fins are hung from the roof structure with the slim steel elements transferring the façade dead load and the 4-ply laminated glass is used for bracing against lateral wind loads. A similar façade support system is utilised for three large glazed atriums, which bring daylight into the interior of the exhibition spaces. In order to optimise the design of the atriums, the structure of these geometrically complex volumes was analysed three dimensionally.
The vertical, partially sloped steel-glass fins stand on the ground with additional horizontal steel framing elements within the horizontal joints for lateral stability.
The façade of the 50 m high office tower is a unitised curtain wall façade. The entire roof structure is cladded in wavelike metal sheets, realising a distinctive worldwide corporate design appearance for Hyundai Motors designed by the architect.
