In Vienna Brigittenau a publicly accessible gas station for electric vehicles (cars, small trucks, electro scooters and electronic bikes) has been built. The so-called Tower of Power was designed as a teaching and research object and mostly erected by the students of the vocational training centre of the BFI Vienna together with leading companies of the e-mobility sector. The design combines two of the most original architectural gestures, the roof and the tower. The roof provides weather protection, light during refueling and accommodates 130 m² of photovoltaic panels. The charging stations are located below the roof. The tower also functions as energy supplier due to a wind tulip integrated in the construction. The building itself is a steel structure and was clad with planar, single and double curved aluminium panels.
The structure consists of a free-standing roof with dimensions of 19.7 and 7.8 metres, which is supported on the column-wall in the centre and on the edge. The tower located at the outer edge has a height of 10.2 metres. The lateral stability in the horizontal direction is ensured by the bracing wall in the centre of the freestanding roof, by a wind bracing inside the roof as well as by two plates which form the side surfaces of the tower. Due to the underground sewer installations and the unfavourable soil properties found during the site examinations, the structural loads were transferred into the ground by means of piles.
