Competition 2007, 1st prize

The office FloSundK architektur und urbanistik and Bollinger+Grohmann together received the 1st prize in the competition for a pedestrian bridge at the Bergwerk Reden. The competition was launched by the Industriekultur Saar.

The pedestrian crosses the bridge on a continuous slight inclination. The edge beams which are positioned vertically at the beginning, focus the view on the mine and shield it from the railroad tracks. The beams continuously tilt further to the outside and reveal a wide view on the premises of the former mine.

The impact of the bridge is achieved by its symbolism: the design refers to early steel constructions. The load-bearing structure equates to a framework, the "free" position of the trusses symbolize a new beginning. The structure is built as irregular stick framework, its structure being generated by an optimizing-algorithm.
