The Museum of Modern Art is one of the most renowned art museums in the world and one of New York's biggest tourist attractions. In view of the increasing number of visitors, only 15 years ago the Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi had enlarged the museum building to about twice its previous area, but even then MoMA had quickly outgrown it. Now the architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro have added an annexe and enlarged the museum by another 3700 m².

The architects of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, have now renovated and extended the building with a new lobby, bookshop and café. Additionally, they increased the museum's exhibition space to a total of 15,300 m² by structurally connecting new gallery spaces in Jean Nouvel's neighbouring residential tower.

The façade design of the architects DS+R of the extension is characterised by minimalistic material use, the most filigree load-bearing structure and maximum transparency. Special structures such as bonded glazing, clamped glazing or high-strength tension members were used to realise the design. The insulating glazing is executed in special formats up to approx. 2.30 m x 9.00 m without visible profiles. A special highlight is a canopy, which cantilevers over 13m free-floating from the glass façade of the entrance area.
