The office FloSundK Architektur und Urbanistik and Bollinger+Grohmann received the first prize in the competition for a pedestrian bridge at the Bergwerk Reden, which the Industriekultur Saar launched.
The pedestrian crosses the bridge on a continuous, slight inclination. The edge beams, positioned vertically at the beginning, focus the view on the mine and shield it from the railroad tracks. The beams continuously tilt further to the outside and reveal a wide view of the former mine's premises.
The bridge's impact is achieved by its symbolism: the design refers to early steel constructions. The load-bearing structure equates to a framework; the "free" position of the trusses symbolises a new beginning. The structure is built as an irregular stick framework, its structure generated by an optimisation algorithm.
