As a system, the shell geometry is flexible and a careful negotiation of structure and program of the recreation centre drives the design. Two formal devices are at the core of scheme: two-way spanning vaults cover the pool areas providing large open spaces; funnel shaped structures provide major points for grounding the structure while offering expansive cantilevers. As an urban landmark, the architecture draws strong colours, the roof form covered by abstracted images of the lantana plant. This provides visual references as pedestrians and surrounding building glimpse parts of this recurring and common motif.
