Long before the term BIM (Building Information Modelling) became modern, we have been planning three-dimensionally. For us 3D models are not only planning tools or aids for structural calculations, but we integrate planning and structural design into an integral process.
Whether free-form structures of steel and glass, timber and glass or multi-storey buildings made of reinforced concrete, we always strive to help our customers through the comprehensive modelling of the structure to implement their projects at best.
Geometry for us is never just a conglomeration of points, lines and surfaces in a Cartesian coordinate system, but always an informed basis with all relevant factors for an intelligent, efficient and appropriate implementation into the built environment. In this sense, we are not pure geometry experts, but experts for the development of complex structures, which can meet different requirements. This allows us not only to optimize the geometry of a free-form surface in terms of the planarity of the load- bearing and / or the façade elements, but also to integrate the structural and the façade design.
Thereby we can adjust our work optimally to the particular task and the specific design idea and develop customized holistic systems together with our planning partners. We are conceptual planners of complex geometries from the initial concept to completion, but at the same time we can contribute our decades of experience in the design and construction of complex structures and thus fertilize the design process.
The parametric structural modeling
In architecture parametric modeling is an increasingly important planning and design tool. Parametric models describe geometries and architecture not statically but dynamically, i.e. a model is defined by variable parameters, making it easy to modify the model.
With parametric structures we are able to react quickly to changes and to calculate and analyze many different variations in real time. It is important for us to communicate with architects in the same common design language and to be able to work closely together. Therefore we do not only use the tools but continue developing them ourselves.
Parametric structural models allow the creation of many different alternative solutions for a task in a split second. In conjunction with modern optimization methods and filter algorithms efficient and intelligent variants can be found that would not be possible in a traditional manual design process. Thereby the efficiency may not only be found in terms of structural characteristics but also in other functional and architectural disciplines. In a multi-objective optimization process for example, aspects of climate and façade design can simultaneously be considered (alongside) with the structure.
We can develop specifically adapted structures which require a minimum amount of material. Thus in collaboration with the architects efficient, intelligent structures evolve. Their creation process and the structures themselves do not only meet the current state of the art, but also support the architectural idea and develop it further.
Similar to coordinated 3D planning, Building Information Modeling is suitable for the geometric alignment of different planning disciplines by means of model analyses and collision control. In addition to the purely geometric information, additional information, so-called attributes, is attached to the individual elements and objects. In addition to collision control, the focus lies here primarily on improved communication in the project and on a coordinated model as the basis for tendering, construction and operation.
The long-time processing of complex building tasks using computer-assisted, parametric tools has long been anchored in the office structure of Bollinger + Grohmann in various project teams and locations.In order to meet the requirements of the market for a BIM process ordered by the client, Bollinger + Grohmann has adapted its office structure accordingly with the start of the BIM implementation as central planning process. The focus of the team goes beyond the processing of complex geometries and operates across all the locations.
One of the core competencies of the new group is process moderation. At the beginning of a project, this superordinate team defines the internal and external project requirements into an appropriate workflow in cooperation with the planning team. In addition, it is now standard to implement a data manager below the project management level. This data manager deals exclusively with the control and administration of the internal and external data records. The central function of this workflow described above is to initiate an integral, transparent, adaptable and evaluable internal planning process for each project.
We can deal with both open and closed BIM processes and provide the ideal software for almost every requirement and scope of work. Several applications can be provided for model checking.
Footbridge 2017 BerlinThe Paper "Intelligent Fabrication - Digital Bridges" was accepted for the Footbridge 2017 Berlin Conference.

Competition for the extension of the Kunsthochschule Kassel: 2nd prizewith Kuehn Malvezzi, Berlin, Germany. The 1st prize goes to Innauer Matt Architekten from Benzau (Austria), the 3rd prize to TRU Architekten Part mbB, Berlin, Germany.
The submitted concepts will shortly be exhibitet in Kassel, Germany.

KEPOS – c[pd]g collective post digital gardenThe MAK FUTURE LAB, in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, invites to the presentation:
"KEPOS - prototype of an interactive sculpture"
KEPOS is an interactive sculpture for the urban space, realized by the Univeristy of Applied Arts in Vienna. The pavilion combines the built and natural environment with the digital world of the information exchange.
The sculpture will be presented from 6 - 22 June 2017 in front of the entrance of the MAK.
Apart from sponsoring, Bollinger + Grohmann gave expert advice and developed the parametric structural design for the pavilion.

IGA Berlin 2017: Inside the FlowerBetween 13 April and 15 October 2017, the IGA Berlin 2017 is inviting to a festival of the most beautiful international garden design and green urban life culture under the motto "an ocean of colours".
In the "Horizons" area is located, among others, the pavilion "Inside the Flower" by the artist Janet Laurence. The project was implemented in cooperation with LAVA and Cityplot, Bollinger + Grohmann gave advice for static issues.
Opening of HYUNDAI Motorstudio Goyang in SeoulIn Seoul, Hyundai's largest adventure centre just opened. On a total of 14 levels are located the new exhibition-, office-, educational- and recreational spaces. The building has also 5 basement levels, housing parking-, service areas. Delugan Meissl Associated Architects from Vienna were responsible for the design and execution, Bollinger + Grohmann were charged with the structural and façade design in this project.

A "Paradiesgarten" for LutherThe contribution "Paradiesgarten" by students of the UdK Berlin within the framework of a students competition was awarded the first prize. The walk-in installation will be shown until September 20th in the "Stadtpark Wittenberg" opposite the meadow of the castle.
Bollinger + Grohmann provided the students during planning and implementation.
Art Biennale in Venice 2017The Austrian Pavilion presents in the course of the 57th Biennale again artistic installations. Bollinger + Grohmann gave expert advice to the artist Erwin Wurm for his Performance One Minute Sculpture "Stand quiet and look out over the Mediterranean Sea" as contribution for the Austrian Pavilion and acted as sponsor.
The Biennale runs from 17 May until 26 November 2017.

Europa leuchtetOn the occasion of the Europe day and the 60th anniversary of the European Union, the EUROPE light installation will shine from the 9th of May for two weeks at the stage tower of the Komische Oper Berlin. The happening presented three artworks, music and talks that put forward a positive statement for Europe.
Bollinger + Grohmann was pleased to support this project and provided technical advice for the organisers.
New website online: IngenieurtalenteThe website is supported by the German Consulting Engineers Association VBI state associations and provides information about careers, training and contact persons in the fiel of engineering careers. The goal is to arouse interest among young people for the job of a structural engineer and the workspace in an engineering office.

Construction site of the Park Apartments Belvedere: Excursion of our Viennese teamA mixed-use building complex consisting of three residential and two hotel towers in close proximity of Vienna central station is rapidly progressing! The open ground floor space with the characteristic piles is clearly visible now. Expected completion is scheduled for autumn 2018.
Won: "Typenhochhaus 2.0"First prize for the competition team of LIN Finn Geipel, Berlin, Germany + Giulia Andi, Paris, France. The aim of the non-open ideas competition was the design of a high-rise as modular system.
Bollinger+Grohmann provided technical advice for the architects.

Exhibition: DAM prize for architecture in Germany 2017The 24 best buildings from/in Germany.
Awarded were among other projects the "Grimmwelt" in Kassel, Germany (kadawittfeldarchitektur, Aachen, Germany), the extension of the "Europäsiche Schule" (NKBAK, Frankfurt, Germany) as well as the residential building at "Quai Henri IV" in Paris, France (LIN Architekten, Berlin, Germany).
The exhibition is running from January 28th until April 30th 2017 in the DAM in Frankfurt, the exibition opening was on January 27th.

Pavilion at the Kochi-Muzuris BiennaleAn art pavilion by Eva Schlegel and Carl Pruscha has been recently completed in Kochi, India. The Biennale opened on 12/12/2016 runs until 29/03/17. Bollinger + Grohmann consulted on the steel structure.
