The ceiling sculpture by LAVA is located in the marketplace of Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport, which itself is set to open on 22 April 2026.
We were commissioned by the executing company, Arnold AG, to carry out the structural design. All components of this complex project were created within an overall parametric model by Arnold.
The structure of the ceiling construction consists of freely shaped aluminum tubes suspended from a substructure between the existing composite beams using steel bands and round bar hangers. The funnel geometry is designed to accommodate natural light from outside and distribute it throughout the entire hall. Approximately 18,000 metres of aluminum tubing were used for the ceiling construction, which was bent on-site in approximately 3,000 different ways.
We congratulate LAVA and all partners involved in planning this sophisticated ceiling sculpture, as well as the Terminal 3 itself! We will make sure to visit before our next departure!
