As part of developing a sustainable masterplan for Westmalle Brewery, we were responsible for the structural engineering. The existing brewery, largely built in the 1930s, had evolved into a fragmented and inefficient complex over time. Our task was to provide structural solutions that would reorganise and future-proof the site, while respecting its historic character.
A central element of the project was transforming the original Art Deco brewery building into modern offices, laboratories, and workspaces. This required careful structural adaptations to meet today’s standards of sustainability, durability, and safety. One of the main challenges was phasing: all works must be carried out so that brewing and production can continue without interruption.
Through these interventions, we helped create a coherent and efficient brewery site that is aligned with the abbey’s values of craftsmanship, tradition, and sustainability.
