On the island of Andørja east of Harstad in Troms, the administration building is located against a rocky outcrop on a site that is both demanding and highly rewarding; narrow and steep in unique surroundings with the sea as a powerful neighbour.
The building consists of two primary levels and two more minor levels in the core. The construction consists of interlocking slabs supported on steel beams between trusses in the façade. At each end, the trusses are supported on rock, and in between, there are supports on the wall slab and core. The structure is braced by disc action in the slabs. Forces are transferred to the bracing walls and then onto the foundation of the rock.
The client had high ambitions for architectural design and wanted to show that a place like Ånderkleiva in Andørja could also accommodate well-planned buildings and stand out with high aesthetic value.
B+G served as consulting engineer from concept to detail design phase.
