The former ‘Niedersachsenstadion’ has been transformed into a modern arena for the 2006 FIFA World Cup with new grandstands and a lightweight, partly transparent roof of 26000 m².

The geometry of the roof structure is a non symmetric ring cable system with two compression rings and two cable rings – an arrangement that divides the roof into two subsystems. The outer roof is a steel structure with an opaque corrugated steel cladding whilst the inner roof is clad with a highly transparent single layer ETFE skin, providing optimal growth conditions for the natural turf.
