Interloop is a 50-metre-long suspended sculpture installed above the main escalators at Wynyard Station in central Sydney. Designed by artist and architect Chris Fox, it incorporates 244 reclaimed timber treads and four combs from the station’s original 1931 escalators. The twisting, accordion-like form reinterprets these heritage elements to create a strong visual link between the station’s past and present.

The sculpture weighs more than 5 tonnes and is entirely fabricated from marine-grade aluminium. After a six-month design and development phase, the artwork took twelve weeks to fabricate, involving over a kilometre of welding, before being installed in an intensive 48-hour operation.

By reusing the timber that had been in for over eight decades, the sculpture emphasises working with sustainable materials.
