The metro station in Riyadh is a key hub in the Saudi capital’s new metro network, connecting two of its main lines. Designed as an open pedestrian plaza, the station features a large stainless-steel canopy. The reflective canopy creates spectacular views through the highly transparent enclosures below, so that trains underground can be seen even from ground level as passengers approach the station.
We assisted Snøhetta Architects in the façade design for key elements. This includes the polished stainless steel canopy, glass and steel enclosures of the passage-way atria, as well as the train-tunnel enclosure and platform screen doors. Fire protection and smoke extraction considerations were a major challenge for this project.
