Competition 2016, 1st prize

The “Schwedlerbrücke” is one of the main pedestrian bridges in the East of Frankfurt. The bridge was built between 1910-13, partially destroyed during World War II and declared as a technical cultural monument since 2010. Tasks of the competition were the restoration and repair of the four historic southern arches, respecting the monument conservation specifications, and a replacement of the three northern bridge spans which were destroyed during the war and rebuilt in the 1950s.

During the intense analysis of the competition documents and requirements, urban and architectural solutions have been developed in an iterative design process, including and implementing specific topics to Frankfurt such as the revitalization of bridgeheads and typical bridge designs from different eras. Structural aspects, the restoration process and the construction sequence were simultaneously taken into account. The protection of the original building material and design homogeneity of the arches and pillars became the primary restoration concept. Adequate methods have been proposed in the course of the design process. Bollinger+Grohmann won the interdisciplinary competition for the Schwedlerbrücke in a joint venture.
