Won: New Hamburg State Opera

We congratulate Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) on winning the competition for the new Hamburg State Opera. Located on the Baakenhöft peninsula in HafenCity, the project will become the future home of both the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Ballet. We had the privilege to support this exceptional architectural vision through our structural and façade engineering.

The new opera house will become a landmark for the city, meeting contemporary acoustic, spatial, and technical standards. BIG’s proposal reimagines the peninsula as a public building within a park. Terraced roof structures rise from the water’s edge, extending the surrounding park and inviting visitors to walk across the building as if it were part of the terrain. Composed of concentric terraces spreading out like soundwaves, the design creates a sculpted topography that anchors the opera within its waterfront setting and establishes strong spatial and visual links across the harbour and the city. The result is a three-dimensional public park, open and accessible from all sides, offering expansive views towards the Elbe, the historic city, Lohse Park, and the harbour.
