The world's northernmost visitor centre will be built in Honningsvåg in Finnmark. Ocean Stories will give visitors from Norway and abroad a deeper understanding of the sea, the aquaculture, and the marine resource management in an Arctic perspective, as well as being a meeting place for the aquaculture industry and Honningsvåg in general. This will be a generator project to revitalise the city's harbour.
The client wants to create an efficient framework for disseminating knowledge about the sea, a good urban space that contributes to activity in the harbour, and flexibility in the building's use throughout the year and in the longer term.
A moderate volume and rational geometry allow for robust and efficient construction. The focus will be on constructability and the usage of recycled and low-emission materials. The building is being constructed as a solid timber structure with wooden ribbed floors and CLT walls. A high degree of prefabrication enables a short construction time, which is crucial given the climatic conditions in Northern Norway. In addition, using as much wood as possible contributes to the client's environmental ambitions.
We were commissioned as structural engineers up to and including the preliminary design phase.
