The building envelope is a functional and complex living surface. It fulfills a diversity of aspects, such as: aesthetics and representation, communication, safety and regulation of the external climate for attaining interior comfort. Every single project defines a specific mix of thermal, acoustic, fire and ventilation performance requirements. Bringing these together with the architectural design is the aim, and it requires not only a profound knowledge of established façade types, but also the willingness to develop façade concepts beyond classic typologies.
Our input to this process is the evaluation of external and internal conditions of the building location, in order to propose a façade and ventilation concept that meets the project’s artistic and functional intentions without sacrificing quality and performance.
We believe that new materials, information technologies and construction methods allow architects and engineers to develop new façade solutions in order to optimize resources and construction time.
from form to material
We create innovative engineering concepts to support ground-breaking architectural proposals. Complex geometries require analysis and rationalization to facilitate the design process and to develop a cost-effective assembly strategy. Our Performative Building Group transfers the surfaces and structures designed into digital representations, taking into consideration materials and structural behavior amongst other project-related issues.
The materialization of the design is the point where the façade starts to live. Our experience in glass design and alternative materials enable us to develop new structural façade concepts, optimizing the material quantity and, as a result, its dimensions.
from building physics to green skins
B+G consultancy also provides recommendations for reaching the envelope’s thermal requirements considering the following issues:
Interaction between thermal, acoustic und structural design, integration of requirements for a sustainable holistic design, incorporation of energy standards, life cycle assessment and ecological accounting, life cycle-oriented design of components, incorporation of requirements for international certification systems (LEED, BREAAM, DGNB, BNB, Passive house, ESTIDAMA, HQE, among others).
from comfort to efficiency
Solar energy which impacts and in places passes through the façade should be controlled to regulate heat gains and improve the visual comfort of interior spaces. We calculate the daylight factor and illuminance of interior and exterior surfaces, leading to optimization of artificial and natural lighting.
Solar radiation or wind flow can be taken into consideration as parameter for shape design. Single- or Multi-criteria-Design is used to balance a complex network of requirements.
From samples to real performance
We advise on the execution of standard physical tests for a full-scale façade mock-up, to accurately assess the weather- and structural performance of the façade system (including envelope design, fabrication and installation) and consequently ensure a superior quality of the whole building.
Some of these tests are: air tightness, static water tightness, dynamic water tightness, soft- and hard body impact.
from recycling to continuity
The refurbishment of a building’s envelope provides not only an exceptional opportunity for a new face but also for an upgrade of its performance, which is important at least for energy savings and often also for occupants’ health and comfort.
Historic listed buildings need to be carefully preserved and improved in a balanced way. B+G Façade’s consultants have the expertise to create such high-quality multifaceted façade concepts.

Lecture: The ESO Supernova - State-of-the-Art planning and constructionIn the course of the information event of the Bavarian Chamber of Civil Engineers, Axel Müller (Bernhardt+Partner) and Alexander Hofbeck (B+G) will talk about the parametric planning and building of the geometrically highly complex solid construction of the ESO Supernova.
In addition to the project presentation, the network "Junge Ingenieure" of the Chamber of Engineers and the relatively new digitalization initiative in the construction industry called "Digital Builders Munich" will be presented.
IASS 2018 Video Contest!: HiLoThis year, the IASS Symposium is hosting a video competition for accepted papers, offering a new way for participants and the public to engage with the work. Videos will be streamed throughout the conference and voted on by participants and public.

FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards: SilverAfter winning Gold at the FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Germany (17.11.2017), the residential building Axis now also won Silver at the FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards.
The well-known FIABCI Awards, according to the Wall Street Journal, the "Oscars of the Global Real Estate Industry", awards prizes in 14 categories each year. Axis, awarded in the category "Residential (High Rise)", is the only German project among the winners.

ArcelorMittal launches Steligence®ArcelorMittal has introduced a new concept for the use of steel in construction, which will facilitate the next generation of high performance buildings and construction techniques and create a more sustainable life-cycle for buildings.
On the occasion of the opening ceremony of Steligence® in London on 19 June, Manfred Grohmann was invited to speak about the new Arcelor headquarters in Luxembourg (architect: Wilmotte et Associés), for which our office is responsible for the structural engineering.
Won: bridge competition in Liègefor the team of the architects from AgwA and B+G in the architecture competition for a 100 m long footbridge, with a central span of 25m over a railroad, near Liège in Belgium. B+G were responsible for the structural engineering.

Groundbreaking ceremony for the EU Commission: Bâtiment Jean Monnet IIThe construction of the new building complex includes two construction phases. First, the 180-meter-long 7-storey main building will be built. In the second phase, the 90 meter high office tower is to be built. Both buildings should be completed by the beginning of 2024. The Bâtiment Jean Monnet II was designed by KSP - Jürgen Engel Architekten. Bollinger + Grohmann are responsible for the structural and façade engineering.

Opening of the new entrance area for the Musée de la Cour d'OrThe new entrance area of the Musée de la Cour d'Or in Metz is intended to radically change the perception and image of the museum. The visitor enters the museum through the old Chapelle des Petits-Carmes. This remarkable historic site was built in 1675 and once housed a monastery community and later the old city library.

Grand Prix Afex 2018 : the finalists have been chosenAmong the 10 finalists is also the crematorium on the grounds of the Hörnli cemetery in Basel, Switzerland. The project in collaboration with Frédéric Guarrigues (Paris) and Bernhard Maurer (Zurich). Bollinger + Grohmann engineers were responsible for the structural design.
The award winners will be announced during the Architecture Biennale in Venice (26.05 - 25.11.2018).
