Philosophy

The building structure is the backbone of every construction project. It is responsible for the stability and serviceability of a building and greatly influences the extent of its use. Structural engineering is the original and core competency of Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure. With an understanding of each design we create individual structural solutions based on our continuously developing strength and expertise in structural engineering. Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure always seek the optimum structural solution.

We avoid dogma, question the status quo and engage ourselves directly with the unique challenges of each individual project. The successful execution of an aesthetic, functional and cost-efficient solution is our goal. We seek to join the design planning process as early as possible and accompany our projects from the initial concept designs through to final completion.

Construction methods and material

We utilise a broad spectrum of possible construction material and building types. Whenever necessary we use our commercial independence as consulting engineers to develop new solutions together with our partners in industries and universities.

Our expertise ranges from ultra-lightweight construction with carbon fibres and textile membranes through to timber, steel, reinforced concrete, structural glass and prestressed structures.

Complex Simplicity

One of our prominent areas of specialty are complex geometrical and delicate structures, where we are one of the pioneers in the development of modern planning tools as well as design implementation.

As engineers these tools are not an end in themselves but, they rather help us to solve unsolvable problems for the owners and design team and to ultimately make them feasible. This is true for instance with the execution of imperfect free forms, the use of robotic techniques or with geometrical optimisation.

Foundations

All buildings require a solid foundation. In addition to traditional footings and mat slab foundations we provide solutions for specialised deep foundations, combined pile-slab foundations and waterproof concrete basement foundation including all required on-site engineering supervision.

Further foundation and excavation measures including watertight cofferdams, sequent piling and underpinning solutions (e.g. high pressure injection) round off our geotechnical portfolio.

Structural Dynamics

Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure have expertise in the area of dynamic analysis which is required for complex problems which cannot be solved with standard structural modelling tools. Such problems include vibration analyses and the calculation of moving systems. We develop solutions for every challenge from the analysis of moving structures to the development of safe building structures in seismic zones.

Our experience ranges from fatigue analysis of bridges to base-isolation of high-rise buildings in high seismic zones.

Timber engineering

The material wood is closely linked to the issues of sustainability and resource conservation. At the same time, of course, being a naturally growing material it has a certain vitality, aesthetics and warmth. Because of its versatility, modern and innovative structural solutions can be developed, which can meet the high architectural quality of each building type or structure. Based on the understanding of the particular design approach, we create timber structures that strengthen their use and future evolution.

Our services  in the domain of Timber Structures comprise the structural design of all building types during all planning stages according to HOAI. We work on projects ranging from single-family house construction up to wide-spanning timber structures. This also includes the planning of temporary structures and modular construction.

Our services include: the development of optimized structures for all building types and special construction, elaboration of the structural analysis, development of special details and innovative solutions, support for the detailed execution design, 3D planning, parametric development of structures and BIM-planning.

During the planning process of timber structures, the integral development of the project is our priority. In addition to the services of structural engineering, we are therefore also responsible for the building physics and fire protection (elaboration of fire protection concepts). This combination of design services facilitates the planning process and leads to efficient, cost-effective and high-quality solutions that we develop in close cooperation with architects, clients and local authorities.

Philippe Parreno has transformed the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London into an immersive experience that aims to challenge the viewer's perception of time and space.
Bollinger + Grohmann have supported the French artist once again on questions relating to the realisation of the constructive design and detailing of his design.

Exhibition: DAM prize for architecture in Germany 2017

The 24 best buildings from/in Germany.
Awarded were among other projects the "Grimmwelt" in Kassel, Germany (kadawittfeldarchitektur, Aachen, Germany), the extension of the "Europäsiche Schule" (NKBAK, Frankfurt, Germany) as well as the residential building at "Quai Henri IV" in Paris, France (LIN Architekten, Berlin, Germany).
The exhibition is running from January 28th until April 30th 2017 in the DAM in Frankfurt, the exibition opening was on January 27th.

Michael Lommertz (B+G Oslo) is one of the initiators of the workshop "Permanently Sustainable - Energy-Efficient Construction Abroad" within the framework of the 5th German Foreign Trade Congress for Architecture, Planning and Construction. Pavilion at the Kochi-Muzuris Biennale

An art pavilion by Eva Schlegel and Carl Pruscha has been recently completed in Kochi, India. The Biennale opened on 12/12/2016 runs until 29/03/17. Bollinger + Grohmann consulted on the steel structure.

Laying of the foundation stone: Musée de la Cour d’Or in Metz

The ceremony for the new entrance of the Musée de la Cour d’Or in Metz took place on December 14. The construction works will be completed by the end of 2017.

Bridge above the Tauber river shortly before completion

The last concreting works need to be done, also railings have to be installed and connecting areas have to be established. But the successful implementation of the design is already clearly visible.

Apprenticeship as draughtsperson in civil engineering

Starting on 01/09/2017 we offer again a training as a draftsman for civil engineering. There is the possibility to attend 2-3 test-days in our Frankfurt office.

Provinciehuis Antwerp construction site

The Viennese planning team of Bollinger + Grohmann visited the construction site of the Provinciehuis in Antwerp. The building shell of the new office tower has meanwhile reached the seventh floor and the congress building has already been completed.

"Robotic Contouring" - Angewandte Architecture Challenge 2016

The result of this year's architectural Summer Program is a 3D resarch pavilion which examines the 3D folding of plastic profiles directly through the use of a robot and then discusses and implements the resulting design approaches. Bollinger+Grohmann focussed together with an international research team of the University of Applied Arts Vienna on the topic of "Robotic Contouring".

Oslo is one of over 30 member cities in the "Open House Worldwide Family". At this year's "Åpne Hus" the project "Trollveien 42" can be visited. Bollinger + Grohmann Ingeniører AS were besides the passive house calculation also responsible for the timber structure and sustainability concept.
